Must Read Resource for Towing, Repo, and Salvage Professionals

computer wrecker

Computers for towers, or anyone are a way of life. They are source of communication, record keeping, presentations, information, purchasing, etc..

To have your computer, or computer system go down for any reason could be financially devastating to your towing or wrecker business.

Thus I found an article in tow times about the importance of protecting your computer system.

As an E-Commerce Manager I depend on computers for about 98.999% of my job. So I have a few additional tips that might save your office staff, or you, some pain.

1-Have a backup system or laptop ready to go if your main system breaks down.

2-Have at least two forms of backup besides the hard drive like an online backup system and an external hard drive.

3-Have set rules for employees on where they can visit and what they can download..period

4-If you have to download make sure to at least do a preliminary online check before opening a file. This is to be done in tandem with your updated virus software. I usually go to www.virustotal.com

These are just a few tips..but it is a subject of the highest importance to protecting your business.

A city ends the use of towing for Predatory Government

Maricopa police admit to towing for dollars, promise change

Location in the state of CaliforniaImage via Wikipedia
MARICOPA -- The chief of police in this hardscrabble town has had a change of heart -- and policy.
But the change didn't come easy. It was accompanied by sleepless nights and a rise in blood pressure for Maricopa Police Chief Derek Merritt.

No more, he says, will cops in this city of 1,200 in western Kern County pull over motorists for hanging a necklace from their rear-view mirror, having a crack in their windshield or driving with a burned-out license plate bulb.

In the past two years, Maricopa police have stopped hundreds of motorists for these and other "equipment violations."

Merritt says, and he's not about to apologize for his officers enforcing it.

When they say you are getting towed....they mean it

Cheeburger Cheeburger Towing

From www.wdef.com

When cranking up the car for a family dinner, Brad Jones, says he did not know by the end of the night he would be without a car and without a lot of money.

Cheeburger CheeburgerImage via WikipediaKarenza Pentiah, Jones' Wife, adds, "We parked behind Cheeburger Cheeburger because we intended on buying my brother a burger there."

But before they placed his order there, they had dinner next door at Buffalo Wild Wings, where parking is only for employees.

Meanwhile, the man paid to monitor the lot for Cheeburger Cheeburger and two other connecting business called a tow truck, according to their records, six minutes after the Jones' parked.

Charlie Eich, owner of Cheeburger Cheeburger, says, "Essentially what happens is people continue to roll the dice. They show up, park, look around, take a chance, and they get towed.

More than 20 signs are tacked up, each explaining their zero tolerance policy, each trying to prevent cars getting towed.

Commentary:

With 20 signs posted and a 6 minute tolerance before towing your vehicle, I wouldn't risk parking their without a receipt from Cheeburger Cheeburger posted on my windshield with the date and time circled in big red sharpie. In fact forget that, I wouldn't even risk getting towed unless I had signed written consent by the owner that I was allowed to park there. Maybe one of the signs could read:

Its cheaper just to buy a cheeburger than to park here and go someplace else...

A towers view on safety

Safety safety safety.

I can’t stress this enough.  Too many drivers are getting injured or killed on the highways from numerous things.  The biggest thing that I can stress is BE SEEN!!!  Wear a vest to light up the scene.  There are numerous things you can do.  I remember one time where I was dispatched to a disabled motorist on a toll road.  It was a BMW and came out as a flat tire.  I thought to myself great, this person has never changed a tire before in their entire life and will most likely sit in the car and leave me to the work.  I arrive on the location of the disablement and find that the shoulder was barely enough to have the BMW on the side of the road, let alone my 21’ ford Jerr Dan Rollback.  I saw the disabled car and turned on every light I had so other motorists could see me.  I positioned my truck behind the disabled car so that as motorists came flying by they could see all the lights much better and not slam into us.  I also pulled a page from the police and decided to angle my truck so it gave me a little more room to work, keeping me out of harms way.
Safety is the biggest thing that we need to follow out there, but so few drivers do.  Wear the safety vest.  Turn on all your lights especially at night.  People can see those work lights and your warning lights. Put extra warning lights on the back of the truck, more than the front.  And if that does not work, flares and triangles are a great tool to keep you safe, whether they are battery powered or the old fashioned ones.

David Frankel

It's good news for parking ticket scofflaws.

A little-noticed bill now headed for Gov. Paterson's desk would let people who fail to pay their fines park on city streets without fear of their cars being towed.

The measure could cost city taxpayers $50 million a year, Mayor Bloomberg says, and seriously harm public safety as more drivers boldly flout parking laws.

"Once it becomes common knowledge that most vehicles will be completely exempt from scofflaw towing, collection rates will drop," Bloomberg wrote Paterson last week, urging him to veto the bill.

"With the loss of towing as a deterrent, the change is also likely to increase illegal parking, endangering public safety."

The possible parking free-for-all comes from a bill sponsored in the Senate by Attorney General candidate Eric Schneiderman, a Manhattan Democrat.

The bill aims to protect people in bankruptcy or financial crisis from losing their last dollar to creditors, putting items out of creditors' reach like homes worth less than $150,000 and wedding rings worth less than $1,000.

The measure drew scant attention when it passed the Assembly and Senate by large majorities several weeks ago.

When city lawyers reviewed the bill, they discovered it would also bar creditors - including cities - from seizing vehicles worth $4,000 or less.

That's $4,000 after outstanding loans, so even luxury cars - Lamborghinis and BMWs - would be protected from towing if they're heavily financed.

City officials say the rules would virtually end their practice of towing cars whose drivers have racked up more than $350 in parking tickets.

"It is impossible to expect marshals and sheriffs in the field - even if they had a Kelley Blue Book - to be able to determine the value of a car after loans and other liens are considered," said a furious David Frankel, the city's finance commissioner.

"This bill tells New Yorkers it is okay to break the law. They can obstruct traffic and hinder public safety."

The mayor's office says it's working with Schneiderman to alter the bill, but the senator defended it yesterday.
"This legislation will ensure that, in these tough economic times, low-income working families who go into debt do not become destitute and entirely dependent on state aid," said Justin Berhaupt, Schneiderman's legislative director.

Gov. Paterson will receive the bill for consideration in the next few weeks. His spokesman said he will review it when it arrives

New Jobless Claims Fall 21,000 for Week | Transport Topics Online | Trucking, Freight Transportation and Logistics News

Initial jobless claims fell by 21,000 last week, the Labor Department said Thursday.

The decline to 454,000 claims for the week ended Saturday was below economists’ forecasts of 460,000 new claims, Bloomberg reported.

The four-week moving average, a less volatile measure, declined to 466,000, from 467,250 the previous week.
Continuing claims for the previous week ended June 26 fell by 224,000 to 4.413 million, the lowest level since November 2008.
