City Council Working WITH The Towing Company

I saw an interesting story about a cooperative relationship between the city government and the towing companies in Cleveland. Rather than just let things go to chance or caving in when the public complains, the city council is working WITH the #towing company to decide fair rates.

Granted, the rates are not as low as the city wants or as high as a company wants BUT it keeps good contractors from walking away due to costs and protects the public. The amount of conflict and complaints this will prevent is immeasurable and would be a great model for other cities.

Slow Down and Move Over For Towing and Wrecker Drivers

With all the warning signs, injuries, and casualties involved with To
wman you think the public would know to slow their vehicle down and move to the other lane when they see a tow truck. Well they don't.

#slow down and move on over if you see a #tower or #wrecker
Give tow truck drivers and wrecker drivers a break

In an article from 9wsyr.com there were over 11,000 recorded violations of the Slow Down Move Over rule in the State of New York. I know there are always people you cannot reach, but that number seems outrageously high

I guess the answer is more education and constant reminders to the public of how dangerous it is for tow truck drivers on the road

Excellent true story from a tow professional who works for ECTTS:

Newsletter: Tow Rescue -  2012

Excerpt from newsletter:

Standing near the officer, I yelled to him asking what I could do. He looked like he was wrestling an alligator as the suspects legs continued to flail. The officer informed me that he needed me to use my radio to call for help because his radio had been busted off in the struggle with the suspect. He yelled

"Call the Chesapeake Police Emergency line and tell them that an officer needs assistance and give them the location."

I shot back and did what he said. From the rear view window of the cab I could still see the officer struggling. I didn't have a weapon and didn't really have any experience arresting people, especially violent people. Still I wanted to try and help the officer. I grabbed my belt off my waist and ran out to help the officer. With the officer holding the legs, I wrapped the belt around the perpetrator's calves and tightened it. As I was doing this, a horde of police cars showed up to help. I was relieved, and grateful that neither of us were hurt. The officer thanked me and I got back in my truck heading toward the impound lot. My shirt was untucked. My hair was ruffled. I knew I was going to get asked some questions when I got back, but it was worth it.

The Economy Newsletter: A Tower Perspective

One of the best parts of our newsletter is getting feedback from towers and truckers. Our last newsletter featured an article about the economy and how it is affecting everyone. Listed below is the original article:

rollbacks for sale

"It is no secret that the cost of everything seems to be going up. This includes staples like, groceries, gas, clothes, and of course, trucks. In our industry, the government approved, technology marvels that we call new trucks, cost money. Likewise, many fleets and owner operators have margins that are tightening. This brings up an important question.

What do we do to make it more affordable for truck owners to upgrade their equipment?

The quick answer is to charge more to ship products, and lower the price of trucks. I wish it were that easy. If we raise prices to consumers, the market is likely to get worse for everyone. If we the lower the price of trucks, you will get trucks that will never pass inspection. There is a potential solution, and if you are still reading at this point, it is probably not what you think.

The key is a vast increase in national employment with salaries at least over $70,000

Wait…don’t stop reading, here is how we can do this. Offer tax breaks to companies for employing a set number of new employees at $70,000 or above for a preset number of years. A large portion of the money would come back to the government in taxes, but the money being paid in salaries would take a joyride through these places:

4 point tie down straps for sale
1.      First consumers would buy cars again, pay off debt, make mortgage payments, eat out, take vacations, buy new homes, pay more for homes, so you can sell your existing home and get out from under your mortgage.

2.      Wall Street would take notice as the market has a sudden infusion of cash.

3.      Stocks go up, allowing baby boomers to retire because the investments in their 401k’s increased enough to give them income again (wow, what a concept).

4.      The companies that supply grocery stores, car dealerships, host vacations, build machines, and build homes need goods and services shipped.

5.      Consumers are making more so you can charge more. They are also receiving a steady income, meaning they more likely to keep buying regularly.

6.      Goods HAVE to be shipped. Consumers are making more and you can charge more.

7.      Margins for companies, including truck companies, go up.

8.      The margins are there to buy that new truck(go to www.ectts.com when your ready).

9.      The debt repayment is allowing finance companies to offer better interest terms to finance that new truck( again, follow instructions in parenthesis at the end of #8).

10.  Part of the salary money goes back to the government in taxes BUT

11.  New tax revenue is coming into the government from restaurants, stores, manufacturers, transportation companies, and of course, the revenue your making on your new carhauler or truck

I know…this is a little outlandish, even for me. But at least it is a new workable solution. The current plan is not working. We need to try something different. The Republication lifetime strategy to give tax breaks to companies with no stipulation does not mean they will hire American workers. Most of those tax break gains will just flow into the pockets of people overseas. Likewise, Democrats trying to pick the next successful company, or ‘investing’ billions of dollars that we do not have is not going to work either. Regardless of what we try, millions of Americans are going to have to have the opportunity to go back to work for wages that don’t leave them at the poverty level. If we solve this, paying for new equipment will be an afterthought."

Bill Wishard of A To Z Towing was nice enough to send in another well written perspective on this article:

"The thought of 70,000 jobs is a start but in the towing and trucking industries the problem we have is the third parties dictating to us what we can charge to get the work. It is happening in the medical field, trucking field, body shops, and probably many others. You can not have insurance companies, brokers, and the government tell you this what we will pay take it or leave it. The guy down the street says he can do it cheaper so we will use him. There is always the guy down the street. When insurance companies dictate what they feel is a proper charge we have no chance to prosper. We can't dictate to them what we can afford for insurance. If you can't afford the rate you go out of business. Example of what is happening. A client calls a motor club and asks for a tow. The club says your memership is expired but we can help you. It will cost you 85.00. Customer agrees and pays. The tower gets called and is paid 40.00 to do the work. Now you ask the motor club or an insurance company for a raise and they can't do it . They are taking our profit and we are being enslaved by them. Enough said. Bill"

Municipalities should move on establishing towing rules | islandpacket.com

From Theislandpacket.com of The Beaufort Gazette

Municipalities should move on establishing towing rules

Published July 2011

Hilton Head Island and other Beaufort County municipalities should follow the county's lead on towing regulations.

In June, the county finalized reasonable rules for towing vehicles from private property without the owner's consent.

The county's ordinance sets limits on how much a tow operator charges and makes it easier and less punitively expensive for owners to get back their vehicles after they've been towed.

The push for towing regulations came from a deadly confrontation in December between a tow-truck driver and a man whose vehicle had been immobilized because it was parked on a street in Edgefield, a community that doesn't allow on-street parking because of its narrow roads.

Hilton Head officials are preparing to take up the issue, perhaps as soon as next month. Like the county, town officials should involve tow operators in the process of drafting an ordinance.

The rules should take into account operating costs for tow truck operators, but it should not allow them to exploit a captive market. When a vehicle is gone, the owner must pay up -- no matter how unreasonable the fee -- or he won't get back his vehicle.

We like the county's lower charges if an owner shows up before the vehicle is hooked up to a tow truck ($75) or before the vehicle is hauled away ($100).

And we like its prohibition against immobilizing a vehicle. Booting a vehicle does nothing to keep private streets and parking lots free of illegally parked vehicles.

Has Chicago Become A Towing War Zone.....

Chicago: Tops in Hostile Tows, Survey Finds

New survey of auto insurance professionals puts Windy City at top of list when it comes to skyrocketing, inconsistent towing charges and fees

July 2011
By Lisa Parker

Add this to Chicago’s long list of accomplishments: first, when it comes to the most hostile towing market.
That's according to a new survey of auto insurance professionals, which puts the Windy City at the top of the list when it comes to skyrocketing and inconsistent towing charges and fees connected to vehicle towing and storage.

Jerr Dan 337 for sale
Chicago’s home state gets a dubious distinction in this survey, too: as the state most in need of legislative remedies on towing issues.

"Chicago topped the list as the city with the most hostile towing market," said  Deirdre Manna, the Vice President of Property Casualty Insurers Association of America, which commissioned the survey of more than 300 companies.

The PCI survey found that consumers nationwide pay through the nose when it comes to unfair and excessive towing fees- to the tune of about 300 million dollars. In Chicago, they say, those abuses run amok.

A bill of rights against the towing industry...

Towing Ordinance Could Lead To License Revocations
Mayor Pleased With Law Council Passed

NDIANAPOLIS -- A new towing ordinance passed by the City-County Council on Monday night could carry stiff penalties for towing companies that don't follow the rules.

Councilors passed the ordinance by a 25-2 vote, months after a 6News report detailing towing practices many considered to be predatory in Broad Ripple, one of Indianapolis' cultural districts.

The ordinance is basically a bill of rights for motorists, setting standards for what towing companies can and can't do, 6News' Jack Rinehart reported.
